The manga was adapted entirely into anime by Toei Animation in two series. Starting from chapter 195 of the manga, its anime adaptation was called Dragon Ball Z and they were adapted into 291 twenty-minute episodes broadcast from April 26, 1989 to January 31, 1996, completing the manga’s story. Two television specials were also created that expanded the story.

At the end of Dragon Ball Z, Toei Animation created a sequel called Dragon Ball GT, in which Toriyama (contrary to popular belief) had a great participation, designed all the characters, including Vegeta and his mustache, and drew all the scenes and the rest. This story continues the life of Goku and his friends years after the end of Dragon Ball Z, facing new dangers. It was released on February 7, 1996, ending on November 19, 1997 with 64 episodes and a special television episode titled Dragon Ball GT: An Alternate History of Goku! On April 5, 2009, the series called Dragon Ball Kai (ドラゴンボール改, Doragon Bōru Kai) was released, a new version of Dragon Ball Z remastered in high definition in widescreen with some changes to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series. Voices and sound effects were re-recorded, edited to better follow the manga, and new opening and ending themes were created.

After the success of the movie Dragon Ball Z: The Resurrection of ‘F’, Akira Toriyama announced the creation of a new series, released on July 5, 2015, the new series recounts the events that occurred after the defeat of Majin-Boo . The series was announced with approximately 100 episodes.

El 5 de abril de 2009 se estrenó la serie llamada Dragon Ball Kai (ドラゴンボール改, Doragon Bōru Kai), una nueva versión de Dragon Ball Z remasterizada en alta definición en formato panorámico con algunos cambios para festejar el 20º aniversario de la serie. Se regrabaron las voces y los efectos de sonido, se editó para que siga mejor el manga y se crearon nuevos temas de apertura y cierre.

Luego del éxito de la película Dragon Ball Z: La resurrección de ‘F’, Akira Toriyama anuncio la creación de una nueva serie, estrenada el 5 de Julio de 2015, la nueva serie relata los hechos ocurridos luego de la derrota de Majin-Boo. La serie fue anunciada con 100 episodio aproximadamente.
『ドラゴンボール』其之百九十五のサイヤ人編から最終話までをアニメ化。前作『ドラゴンボール』（以下、『元祖』）からタイトルを変更し、新番組として制作された。
本シリーズのアニメ化作品では最も長い約6年10ヶ月ものロングランとなるなど、人気面で絶頂を迎えた作品である。これは東映および東映アニメーションが製作したアニメ作品としては、2007年に『ONE PIECE』に記録を塗り替えられるまで最長の年数で、一話完結ではないアニメが5年以上放送されたのは当時としては異例であった。
日本のみならず世界40カ国以上で放映された。フジテレビは子供達の楽しみも考え、水曜日のプロ野球中継を減らしていた。特に人造人間編の頃には、優勝決定などの重要な試合以外は本作を通常放送し、番組終了後の19時30分から野球中継する場合もあった。初代オープニングテーマ『CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA』も170万枚[2]のヒットとなった他、本放送中に劇場公開版アニメが断続的に制作され、本放送中の春と夏に東映系の映画館にて公開された。
平均視聴率は、20.5%（関東地区）[3]、最高視聴率は、関東で、27.5%（1994年2月23日放送。第218話「バレちゃった!! サイヤマンは孫悟飯」。関東地区）[4]関西地区は、34.1%（1991年11月13日放送。第116話「悟飯に一瞬の勝機!! あの魔凶星を撃て…」）。
2003年には、全話とTVSP2話に加え、OVA『ドラゴンボールZ サイヤ人絶滅計画』を収録した「DVD-BOX」が発売。また2006年より、単品DVDが各巻5話 – 6話収録で発売された。本番組はBSフジや東京MXテレビなどの一部の地方局などでも再放送されていた（地域によって異なる）[注釈 2]。
