The Dragon Ball franchise began in 1984 with Dragon Ball, a manga series written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama. It follows the story of a young boy named Son Goku, who has a monkey tail and extraordinary strength. Inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, the series starts as a lighthearted adventure but gradually shifts toward martial arts tournaments and high-stakes battles. Goku’s quest for the Dragon Balls—seven mystical orbs that summon a wish-granting dragon—forms the backbone of the early stories.
Dragon Ball Z picks up the story years later and is known for transforming the tone into something much more intense and battle-focused. This part of the franchise introduced iconic elements like Super Saiyans, power levels, aliens such as the Saiyans and Frieza’s race, and intergalactic threats. Goku discovers his extraterrestrial origins and battles enemies like Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu. This era of the franchise is what catapulted it to global fame, particularly for its dramatic transformations and massive-scale fights.
Dragon Ball GT was a non-canon sequel that took place after Z. It followed Goku, now turned back into a child, as he traveled the universe looking for the Black Star Dragon Balls. While GT had some new ideas, like Super Saiyan 4 and Baby as a villain, it received mixed reviews and was not written by Akira Toriyama himself, which led to it being treated more like an alternate story.
Years later, Dragon Ball Super revived the franchise with Akira Toriyama’s involvement again. It takes place after the Majin Buu Saga of Z and introduced new concepts like Gods of Destruction, alternate universes, and powerful beings like Beerus, Whis, and Jiren. Super also brought in transformations like Super Saiyan God, Super Saiyan Blue, and Ultra Instinct, pushing the limits of what characters could achieve. The series ran as both a manga and anime and was followed by successful movies like Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
The franchise includes multiple movies, spin-offs, games, merchandise, and a massive international fanbase. Its influence on pop culture is undeniable, and it continues to grow with each new installment, keeping both old and new fans engaged.
Trunks and Goten are the sons of Vegeta and Goku, respectively. They are introduced during the Majin Buu Saga in Dragon Ball Z. Goten is cheerful and kind-hearted like his father Goku, while Trunks is more confident and brash, much like his father Vegeta. Despite their young age, both are capable of transforming into Super Saiyans, something that shocked fans and characters alike, since Goku and Vegeta had to go through intense trauma and training to achieve that form.
Their fight in the Tenkaichi Budokai (World Martial Arts Tournament) is one of the most underrated and entertaining moments in Dragon Ball Z. Taking place in the junior division, this battle showcases not just their raw power but also their personalities. Trunks appears to have a slight edge in power and experience, being a year older and more aggressive in battle. Goten puts up a solid fight with great technique, showcasing his natural talent and Goku-like spirit.
The fight is playful yet intense for their age, with both boys going Super Saiyan and using impressive techniques. The crowd is astonished, and even the adults are taken aback by their strength. Eventually, Trunks wins by using a sneaky feint—firing a blast while pretending to yield. The moment reveals how tactical Trunks can be, but also how sportsmanship still matters in the Dragon Ball world. Afterward, the two fuse into Gotenks later in the series to fight Majin Buu, but their individual fight during the tournament remains a fan-favorite for how it mirrors the Goku vs. Vegeta rivalry in miniature form.
