Akira Toriyama was massively inspired by the 16th-century novel “Journey to the West” and his favorite kung-fu movies, especially those starring Jackie Chan! (Goku is based on the Monkey King, Sun Wukong!)
But here’s the twist: Bruce Lee’s influence was direct, too! Toriyama confirmed he based the Super Saiyan’s “paralyzing” eyes on Bruce Lee’s iconic stare.
