[作画 MAD/AMV] Ryou Oonishi (大西亮)

Ryou Oonishi was trained at the Toei Animation Research Institute (he appears to be still affiliated with Toei to this day) and debuted as a Key Animator in One Piece #292, later going through productions such as Powerpuff Girls Z, Digimon Savers, Precure, Dragon Ball Ultimate Blast, etc.

He began to stand out for having a particular sense of Three-Dimensional Depth in his animations, which he would develop little by little, with One Piece #405, Buddha: The Great Departure and Rainbow Fireflies being those projects in which he specialized in the Volume and Character Acting, reaching the highest point during his participation in Tiger Mask W.

At that point, his style consisted of keeping the character model very well and making them move a lot, zooming in and out in the foreground with circular movement (similar to You Yoshinari), in addition to implementing many smears for speed and working at complicated angles in which he made his great volume management stand out even more.

Oonishi worked on Dragon Ball for quite some time, being an Animator for Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock (2011), Battle of Gods (here he was one of the Animation Directors, overshadowed by the rigorous and ugly supervision of Tadayoshi Yamamuro) and Dragon Ball Super TV, but he reached his pinnacle with Dragon Ball Super Broly.

DBS: Broly was a perfect opportunity to stand out due to Yamamuro’s replacement as Designer and Animation Supervisor, being replaced by Naohiro Shintani with soft and bold character design inspired by Minoru Maeda’s designs, plus bringing together most of the studio’s talent and a lot of visual creative freedom was given, making this film something unique for Dragon Ball.
Here Oonishi not only did the best work of his career, he also did the best work in the movie and such in the entire franchise, with a continuous sequence of more than 4 minutes.

After DBS: Broly, he participated in Digimon Adventure (2020), being the animator in charge of the most important moments of the program and most of the evolutions of Agumon and Gabumon. In this project, Oonishi’s potential was exploited to the fullest with sequences that were as well animated as they were striking.

From then on Oonishi has become one of Toei’s star animators, considered the “Ace Animator”.

His current style is quite close to the one he perfected during Tiger Mask W, but after DBS: Broly, he added some other elements, so it can be described as continuous zooms to the screen, circular movement, smears to reinforce speed generally making the contours pointed in the direction of movement (having a speed lines effect) and sometimes accompanied with a blur, well-worked and consistent shading, rotations, complex angles, strong representation of volume and animation in 1s for a greater fluidity at specific moments are some of the things that define his work

In recent years he stood out for being the best current Digimon animator and now that Digimon Ghost Game is over, I suppose he will be used for One Piece along with the other studio talents.
